YAY!! Got this in the mail today, for my birthday from Gabrielle Lamake, one of the coolest chicks EVER..
I know, I know, It is really bad that I have never read it, so I can’t wait to start. Feminism is kind of a dirty-ish word here, which is really different from my New Paltz / New York roots. I was raised by a woman who always taught me that feminism was a beautiful word. That feminism was the reason I could read, write, and yell if need be. For that reason, and because I truly believe feminism ( which is simply the fight for EQUALITY with male counterparts ) is a beautiful thing it drives me up the wall that women all over the developed world are so afraid of the word.
It really makes me angry when women like Lady GaGa ( who I absolutely love otherwise ) are afraid to call themselves feminists. GAGA, you can cover your body in meat, go half naked to your little sisters graduation, and show up to a Yankees game in 10 inch heels but your not brave enough to to answer the question “are you a feminist” with a “yes”?! It means equality not supremacy, and it is stupid that even women who have broken through the glass ceiling and are earning millions of dollars cannot call themselves feminists. Strong and Smart is sexy, the fear of appearing to much of either of these things is the real problem.
Anyway, in Ireland they have women studies, but gender studies, women education and minority studies are not popular education topics. It isn’t bad just different. Oral Contraceptives have only been legal here since the mid- 1980’s, and abortion is still illegal. Although these topics are women’s issues, I do understand that there are feminists on both sides of the abortion case, but it is weird to me that the issue is not a discussion often had here.
At home, gay marriage and health care rights, abortion, and access to birth control are all points of discussion between politicians, the media, students and sometimes they might even make an appearance at a holiday dinner with your drunk uncle. It’s not the difference in policy which is hard for me to understand, it is the lack of coverage these issues have here. I’m not trying to sound harsh, or ethnocentric like I said, it’s not bad, just different.
Anyway the vagina monologues, I can’t wait to read it, and then leave it somewhere where someone else can read it.
